2021-2022 Ice Season Wrap-up

2021-2022 has been another (third during the last 10 years) extremely mild season in the recent history of the Caspian. Majority of ice cover was gone after the first week of March. However, winter has tried to keep its grip on the region with recurring ice formation along the northern coast during two cold snaps…

End of 2020-2021 Ice Season

Open Water conditions were declared in the Caspian Sea on the 2nd of April. There are still several eroding stamukhi remaining along the northern coast which will melt in about a week under wave action with persistently positive air temperature. This ice season has lasted for 137 days which makes it one of the longest…

Winter ice season continues into 2021

Rare coincidence of cloud free weather in the beginning of January 2021 and simultaneous bypass of Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 satellites over North Caspian Sea allowed us to make high resolution image of entire area (New Year’s present!). Ice remains stable along the northern and eastern shores. Recent winds has caused ice drift to south-east across…

Ice continues its extend in Caspian Sea

Cloudless weather over North Caspian Sea over last several days allowed us to observe the extend of sea ice until Mangyshlak bay. There is distinct border between older stabilised ice developed along the northern and eastern shores in November and younger mobile ice in the central and southern parts of the area. Kashagan, Peshnoi and…

2020/2021 Caspian Freeze-up

Today’s MODIS image illustrates that negative air temperatures combined with extreme down surge event resulted in a new ice formation along the coastline of NE Caspian Sea.

Heli E in Gulf of Finland

Iceman.kz in cooperation with aOrion and Quas have conducted trials of aOrion Heli E Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in the Gulf of Finland in March 2019. Iceman has planned the flights to identify specific ice features for further ice charting purposes and monitored weather to maintain window of opportunity with suitable conditions for operations. aOrion…

Sentinel-2 Automated Processing Launched

Sattelite Imagery Catalogue for the Caspian Sea is now updated with clear and partly cloudy Sentinel-2 images which are useful for ice charting analysis. Records exist since launch of Sentinel-2A in 2015 and are updated automatically on a regular basis. Sample RGB post-processed image is available in our Public folder.

Remote Sensing

ICEMAN.KZ is focused on operations with remote sensing data handling numerous satellite platforms with diverse sensors (mainly SAR). We gained vast experience in data post-processing and automation through years of ice charting operations and intend to share our knowledge through provision of Remote Sensing Services. Sentinel Mission Sentinel Mission within Copernicus Program is the major…
