25ᵗʰ International Conference on Port and Ocean Engineering under Arctic Conditions in Delft Netherlands is now over. Iceman.kz has attended with their contribution into community. The following works summarising our experience of working with sea ice in the Caspian were presented for discussions during technical sessions: Early Freeze-up Scenario in the Caspian Sea summarises experience…

Caspian Stamukhi Data Release

ICEMAN.KZ opens access to stamukhi observations database for the Caspian Sea from 2014 to 2019. Interactive summary PowerBi Report and short description of major parameters are published to Data Access section on our website. Report is an easy to use tool to conduct basic queries on the phenomena occurences illustrating distribution of intensity and quantities…

Marine Operations in Ice Covered Waters of Shallowing Caspian

Decreasing water level in the Caspian may soon affect established logistical solutions in the Northern shallow part of it. The POAC paper discusses building access channels to existing and future offshore facilities in the Kazakhstan sector that is more vulnerable to the problem. The major accent is made to sea ice related hazards affecting marine operations in channels through shallow waters based on experience in the Volga Caspian channel (VCC).

Heli E in Gulf of Finland

Iceman.kz in cooperation with aOrion and Quas have conducted trials of aOrion Heli E Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in the Gulf of Finland in March 2019. Iceman has planned the flights to identify specific ice features for further ice charting purposes and monitored weather to maintain window of opportunity with suitable conditions for operations. aOrion…

2018-2019 Ice Season Closure in the Caspian

2018-2019 ice season is finished in the Caspian Sea. It was one of the mildest winters during the last years despite the earliest start with first ice forming on November 12th. Early date of last ice in mid-March was good time for operators to switch to summer fleet. The short video illustrates how it went…

Break-up in the Caspian Sea

Ice Cover has started breaking up intensively in the Caspian. Strong winds anticipated in the next few days will lead to destruction of majority of ice cover. However, whatever is left in the region will be melting away with warmer air temperature and increasing influx of solar radiation. You can observe performance of our thermal…

Sentinel-2 Automated Processing Launched

Sattelite Imagery Catalogue for the Caspian Sea is now updated with clear and partly cloudy Sentinel-2 images which are useful for ice charting analysis. Records exist since launch of Sentinel-2A in 2015 and are updated automatically on a regular basis. Sample RGB post-processed image is available in our Public folder.

Ice gouges in Caspian Sea

Springtime and open water season is approaching fast. Each year ice cover melts in shallow waters of Caspian Sea and start revealing the artwork of nature – multiple gouges on the seabed plunged by stamukhi and ridge keel during winter time. Landsat-8 image from March 2017 shows the perfect shot illustrating the process.

Caspian SatLog Online

ICEMAN.KZ presents satellite imagery catalogue containing list of images for the Caspian Sea since 2000. It has parameters associated with each image allowing to assess usability of the dataset for ice charting purposes. These are cloud cover, spatial coverage and temporal gap for each area of interest sorted by type of satellite. Quick guide how…
