Deteriorating ice conditions in the Caspian Sea

High resolution Sentinel-2 image on the 16th of March shows that ice conditions in the North Caspian Sea are deteriorating. Multiple cracks, leads and mobile floes are observed in previously stable ice cover in Prorva, Peshnoi and Kashagan East areas. Kalamkas and Kashagan Highway areas are entirely in mobile ice conditions. Negative air temperatures which can stabilize ice cover and produce new ice are not expected during this season anymore. The deterioration process will keep going until conditions will become ice free closer to the end of March and beginning of April.

We keep looking at ice condition in the region and produce quicklooks for some of the areas.
